We have had more than 10 years experience with tutoring and teaching our child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Below is a few of the Teaching Aids we used that we believe were the most effective in her development and knowing. These methods can be used with any youngster with or without an Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive Development Disorder or Special Requirements.
Teaching Aid 1 – Establishing a Therapy Room
In the beginning exactly what got us going was the SON RISE program. Liz went to America to the Option Institute and did a 2 week course on the best ways to cope with a child with Autism, methods for working with and tutoring a child with Autism and the best ways to set up a therapy space for a tutoring a child with Autism and or Special Requirements.
The course is not just for Moms and dads of youngsters with Autism, however also for youngsters with Knowing Difficulties, Pervasive Development Disorder (PDD) and youngsters with Special Requirements in basic. The course also concentrates a large amount on the best ways to deal on a psychological level with the fact that your youngster has an intellectual impairment, and there is ongoing support if you so wish.
On Liz’s arrival back home we set up a therapy space. We used an extra room and painted it in intense colors. We set it up with racks and storage drawers, play equipment, a computer system and printer, an ideal youngster’s height table and chairs for table top work and a durable floor covering. The basic idea was to have a room the youngster can relate to as a learning and fun area only, somewhere that they will in time know that when they are in there it is time to learn.
Teaching Aid 2 – Getting With to a Youngster with Autism
One of the extremely useful things Liz picked up from the SON RISE program was a technique to work with Autistic youngsters, a way to get with to them and that was to get yourself to their level. Come down on the floor and rock with them, spin things like they do, repeat the noises they make, enter their world. This is exactly how we got Isy to acknowledge us, by doing just that! She began to pay focus when we entered her world and gradually we began to affect her behavior and please her thirst for discovering.
The majority of youngsters with or without Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Development Disorders, Knowing Difficulties or Special Requirements enjoy discovering, they have a thirst for understanding, it is just a matter of finding the best ways to get with to them and making the discovering fun for them and yourself.
Teaching Aid 3 – Applied Behaviour Analysis and Discrete Trial Teaching
The next action for us was entering Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT). Liz also sought out and trained therapists, including Uni students to work with Isy intensively and her progress was remarkable. Isy enjoyed to be in her therapy space knowing. Each session would run for 2 hours, and she would get up to three sessions a day around six days a week.
In a fairly short time Isy started to learn to count, spell her name, reviewed books, ask for things, say yes and no, imaginative play, identify genders, moods, numerous products, and far more. In a nutshell she began to connect and know her environments, we were over the moon! This stuff really works.
Teaching Aid 4 – Personalized made The Best Teaching Aid and IT Computer system based Aids
After a while Liz was accumulating rather a range of Autism Spectrum Disorder related Teaching Aids, which could also be used with youngsters with Special Requirements, resources such as – picture cards, forms, puzzles, color cards, sizes cards, picture books, gender cards, etc. I also started to make up some IT or Computer system based training aids such as Interactive Flash Cards with audio, and a customised interactive Toilet Training Program. Around this time I was working in Antarctica and I would send out Isy via the web interactive stories of her favored characters (Snowy and Humphrey) in Antarctica, this really went a long method in teaching her to read, she would surge the stories!
Teaching Aid 5 – Things Kid Love Doing
Another terrific teaching aid which I used to instruct Isy language was her trampoline. She used to love jumping on the trampoline as well as more so when I joined her, we would play ridiculous games that required her to count or say short sentences. I would punctuate to the sky and get her to say short sentences like “touch the clouds in the sky” or “your turn” and “my turn” I would intentionally lie on the trampoline until she would ask me to “get up papa” and “lets jump papa”. Those early days on the trampoline where Isy was beginning to learn to talk and we would jump laugh and often just lie and take a look at the birds in the sky were without a doubt a few of the best and most unforgettable days of my life.
